What type of program do you offer?
We offer a BSN, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a four-year baccalaureate degree program. The graduate is eligible to apply for examination for licensure as a registered nurse (RN). The first two semesters are non-nursing courses consisting of 34 credit hours. To complete the program in four years a student must qualify to take College English and College Algebra in the first semester of college. When you begin nursing in the fall semester of the sophomore level there is a three-hour classroom (non-clinical) course and a three-hour pharmacology course. Starting with the spring semester of the sophomore level, there are a total of five semesters of nursing courses with a clinical component.

BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) - four-year baccalaureate degree nursing program. Graduates may take the national RN licensure examination upon graduation.
AD (Associate Degree) - two-year RN program in a junior college setting
LPN (Licensed Practical Nurses) - Vocational school training
Do you offer an LPN to BSN program?
Yes. Students who are LPNs (Licensed Practical Nurses) follow the same admission procedures for any new student to the College or Department of Nursing. However, LPNs may challenge the first clinical nursing course NSG 203 Nursing I for seven college credits. In addition, courses taken by a pre-LPN student in which college credit has been awarded may also be transferred. An example of transferable courses would be Anatomy and Physiology courses taught at a community college for college credit before or during the LPN program. A minimum grade of "C" is required for the transfer of college credit. Please refer to the Admission Plan for LPN to BSN (PDF).
When are you eligible to apply for admission?
After you have completed at least the first two semesters and have an overall 2.5 GPA, you are eligible to apply to the Department of Nursing. You must apply to Our Lady of Holy Cross College as well as to the Division of Nursing (two application processes). You must complete 12 hours (three four-hour courses) in the science area from the following: BIO 351 Anatomy and Physiology I, BIO 352 Anatomy and Physiology II, BIO 370 Microbiology, CHE 207 Inorganic, Organic and Biochemistry I (General College Chemistry), and CHE 208 Inorganic, Organic, and Biochemistry II. All of these courses consist of three hours lecture with one hour or more of laboratory (lab) for a total of four hours each.
A reading test and the TEAS are required for admission to the Division of Nursing. The reading test is administered at the beginning of each semester and the TEAS is administered by the Department of Nursing in February and March each year. If you are a transfer student and transferred both ENG 101 and 102 English Composition I and II and/or MAT 205 College Algebra, you must take and successfully pass the English and/or Mathematics Proficiency Examinations.
A pre-nursing student may apply to Our Lady of Holy Cross College for fall, spring, or summer admission. The Department of Nursing admits nursing students once a year (in the spring) for the fall semester. The admission process for the Department of Nursing begins in February. A student may apply to the College previous to, or along with, completing their application to the Department of Nursing.
Is Financial Aid available?
If you are a full-time student, the tuition would average around $2,100 a semester for the nursing courses. Financial aid is available; you must contact the financial aid office in the College for a packet.
Can you go to school part-time and at night?
You may earn some of the prerequisites and corequisites as a part-time student and at night. When you begin the clinical nursing sequence, some of the actual nursing courses are offered only during the day. The classroom time is usually Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. The clinical days are Tuesday and Thursday. There are no nursing courses on Saturday or at night. In addition, nursing courses are not taught in the summer. However many clinical students take required non-nursing courses in the summer session.
Is the nursing program accredited?
The nursing program has full accreditation by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) and full approval by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing (LSBN).
What hospitals are used?
The Department uses hospitals throughout the New Orleans region including West Jefferson Medical Center, Ochsner Westbank, Children's Hospital, East Jefferson General Hospital, DePaul/Tulane Hospital, Veteran's Administration Medical Center, Touro Hospital, Ochsner Hospital, and University Hospital. The hospital or clinical agency you attend depends upon the course in which you are enrolled.
How many nursing students have graduated from OLHCC?
The first class graduated in 1986. As of graduation 2006, 615 students have graduated from OLHCC Department of Nursing.
