The Orleans Public Defenders (OPD) provides representation to indigent criminal defendants in Orleans Parish. The OPD is committed to excellence in the provision of legal services for indigent defendants and client-centered representation that respects the humanity and dignity of those accused of crimes.
With the dual goals of better addressing the underlying problems facing OPD clients (addiction, mental illness, homeless, etc..) and improving the exchange of information between the OPD and the Orleans community, the Community Outreach/Resources Coordinator will, in consultation with the OPD Director and the OPD's supervising social worker, initiate and maintain connections with relevant community groups, organizations and individuals; initiate and conduct OPD community outreach events; and identify, expand and maintain a network of viable medical, clinical, substance abuse treatment, educational, vocational, employment and housing-related services available in the New Orleans area to which indigent OPD clients can be referred.
The candidate must have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to initiate and maintain an independent program with limited supervision. Experience in program development, community organizing, outreach to low-income communities, and work with community-based social services are all valued. Skill in using various computer software database, spreadsheet, word processing, and network programs is also considered.
The position is full-time. The salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience.
