NEW ORLEANS - Our Lady of Holy Cross College offers free income tax preparation and electronic filing for tax payers with incomes under $51,000 on Wednedays from Jan. 30 through April 10 at the college, 4123 Woodland Dr. in the Algiers neighborhood.

Tax accounting student interns, specially trained and certified by the IRS, prepare basic tax returns for low-to-moderate income taxpayers who do not itemize deductions.  They also can help tax payers with special tax credits such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Education Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.  Our Lady of Holy Cross College offers the tax assistance through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA).   Tax assistance is available from 9 am until 4 pm in the college's room 17.  Free parking is available.  Persons interested in learning more about the free tax assistance program may call 504-398-2230.

"Our Lady of Holy Cross College is committed to serving our community in every way we can," says President Ronald J. Ambrosetti, Ph.D.  "Supplying free tax preparation to tax payers helps the community, and it gives our accounting students valuable experience."

Lillian S. Grose, CPA, MBA, Assistant Professor, Accounting, who coordinates the program at the college, explains, "Our talented accounting students eagerly go through the training and certification to volunteer with tax preparation.  Qualified tax payers can simply come to the college and have their returns prepared and filed at no cost.  We're pleased to participate once again in the VITA program because it's such an beneficial community service."   

Those qualifying for assistance should bring the following:

  • Proof of identification
  • Social Security Cards for you, spouse and dependents
  • Birth dates for you, spouse and dependents on the tax return
  • Current year's tax package if you received one
  • Wage and earning statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, from all employers
  • Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
  • A copy of last year's federal and state returns, if available
  • Bank routing numbers and account numbers for Direct Deposit
  • Total paid for daycare provider and the daycare provider's tax identifying number (the provider's Social Security Number or the provider's business Employer Identification Number)
  • To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms
